Your 3TB storage unit. What you really want for something that large is an NAS. Either a fileserver PC or a large NAS enclosure. I have no experience of the latter, but the former is quite easy to set up. You don't need a particularly powerful CPU or that much RAM, just a build that can store lots of disk space. Either set up a Linux CLI to host the drives, or use Windows and run windows filesharing. Just be aware that you can't really install games to your server if you use the windows method, it's just too slow. Data transfer speeds fine, but individual file latency is huge.
I do strongly recommend using a PC fileserver though, it's a nice cheap way (yes, cheap) of getting a Gigabit NAS. Most of them are only 100Mbps, very slow indeed for 3TB worth!

Thanks for the compliments on my sound system... Yes the 1500w RMS set-up certainly does pack some punch! The speakers you see in the photo are meant to be at the front of the room. What you see in the photo is the center speaker, left and right speakers and 2 sub-woofers. My surround speakers are where they are meant to be (at the back of the room)... :-P

I took so many on this trip it's going to take me awhile to put all my favorites up, especially since I just got back right now from shooting a friend's band and I'll have to send them their shots before I get back to these. The camera does make a difference, although there is quite a bit of just learning to see what other people don't necessarily see involved.
My sister and brother in law bought me a plane ticket to go up to Monterey and stay with them for a few days, hence the opportunity to take these pictures. My brother in law walked on the same beach with us and was surprised at the photos I took.
Seriously I would recommend doing what I did and taking a class or two in design. The basics of art apply no matter what medium you're working in. Thinking about the use of elements such as space, color, line, value, and composition help you see your craft differently. I know that every time I do another graphic design piece such as the posters, or ask myself what if I shot this subject from a different angle or played with the lighting, that I am using things I learned. Study other artists and ask yourself what they did that turns you on? Absorb everything you can and then shoot as often as you can. I'm 45 years old and spend most of my life studying other people's art and photos, while only having little point and shoot cameras to use myself. Very frustrating. It was a gift to myself that gave my inner creative self the outlet I needed when I bought myself this camera. I have not stopped taking picutres since. Three kids, all their scout and family events, nature, bands, friends, nothing is safe from me. :)
One of the things I love about digital photography is that back in the days of film, I had to pay for every shot I took. I had to buy the film, wait until the roll was full, pay to have it developed and then, days later, I would know if it was any good. I love being able to shoot multiple versions of a shot and immediatlely have some sense of what I want to keep and what I will delete- and then once I upload them to the computer I delete a whole lot more, but I have learned from experience to be able to see a lot more than I used to just in my camera.
Practice makes perfect, and over time you develop your own style. Friends tell me they know my shots. That said, I would love to have a better camera than I have because I could do so much more than I do.
Back in 2002, when I got my camera, I had $500 and had to look for the best deal I could find. I read every review I could find online and at the time, two cameras kept coming up again and again as the very best available in the $500 and under range. One was a Canon and then the other was the one I got, an Olympus Camedia C4000. As cameras go today, it isn't all that much. It's a digital SLR , 4 megapixels, but I think I did my homework well. The reviews at the time noted that different digital cameras were better than others at things like shooting in low light (which mine does pretty well) and how certain cameras were not as good at picking up true versions of certain colors. I would have to do a lot of research now to see what is best now and one of these days I will, because I would love to upgrade eventually.
Things I would look for now: More megapixels. But I have also heard that you don't necessarily want to go for the biggest number. The quality of the lenses and other things are more important. After all, I have beautiful 8x10 framed prints hanging on my wall that were taken with the 4 megapixel camera. The greater resolution is not very meaningful unless you're planning to do a lot of zooming or print very large prints. When I worked at Sears taking professional photos in their studio, we used 6 megapixel Olympus camera. I did the Project Brainstorm studio portraits at the very beginning of my images on Afterdawn there with that camera. Some customers had us print 20x24 wall portraits. If 6 megapixels were fine for that, you know it's going to be fine for your snapshots.
Some of my friend's newer cameras have image stabilization. I could use that sometimes. Seems like some days my hand is very steady and others not. I have a tripod but shoot a lot of things on the fly. If you're in a band you will probably learn to not be surprised to suddenly realize I am upside down between your legs shooting up into your guitar. Deal with it. I have never been stepped on or caused anyone to fall yet.
I would love interchangeable SLR lenses. Some of the newer cameras have the same kind of bodies and take the same interchangeable lenses as any SLR. WANT. NOW! What I could have done in Big Sur with a great telephoto lens! The job at the studio spoiled me for a remote. Sometimes the camera has to be soooo steady for a good shot. I would love to be able to have a camera that would take a remote cable for those kinds of shots.
But then I would also love to have a whole lighting and reflectors set too. :)
By the way- unless you have a professional studio setup, 99% of the time people will look WAYYY better without flash. I hate what flash does to skin and use natural light as often as I can. Afternoon light makes everyone look better.
No matter how much is automatic, you definitely want to be able to override everything and set anything you want as if you were using a traditional SLR. Yes, I do use some of the automatic settings some of the time but I have much more control if I can have all the advantages of a traditional SLR with the advantages of digital
I have seen incredible pictures taken by a friend of a friend with a Nikon D40. From what I hear, this guy had no artistic skills prior to this. Supposedly it is purely the camera. I don't know, that's just what I have heard. As I say, these are all things I would look for but I'm not recommending a specific camera right now.
Oh, one more thing I would look for and I don't know if you can get that but I was lucky with my camera. A lot of cameras only use one kind of battery or have their one brand's proprietary battery you have to use which gets very expensive. My camera will take normal AA batteries. I have used the normal ones, rechargeables and my favorites- the lithiums because they last so much longer. If I had to use only the kind that that camera company made I would probably have been stuck many times without power.

The aquarium took the penguins after New Orleans was unable to care for them when they had their disaster. I guess if you're going to be in captivity, having one of the most respected, premier marine research facilites of the world care for you is about as good as you can get. I know in the case of a lot of the animals like the sea otters, those they care for that are able to be released back into the wild are let go. You can often see some of the ones who are being trasitioned back frolicking in the waters around the aquarium. Other animals that cannot be released back are kept and cared for. They have a very good breeding progam which allows them to minimize the capturing of wild fish etc and are the headquarters for the organization Seafood Watch, which promotes sustainable seafood use. As a parent and a teacher, I am impressed with the way so many places like this have become leading research, conservationist and educational facilites, rather than simply the repositories of displayed nature that they tended to be in my childhood. While I was there, for example, the murres (some arctic birds) on display had been rescued from an oil spill and were being nursed back to full health. You won't find any animals performing tricks or doing shows here. But there are a lot of interactive exhibits for adults and children to learn about the ocean, its creatures and how we depend on each other. Hello Trippy, when you say a hack to run Blu-ray movies on a P4, what exactly do you mean?
Of course, you will need the required hardware (Blu-ray optical drive) and/or software to play Blu-ray movies. However, a P4 doesn't have enough power to decode a 1080p Blu-ray movie. Well, a 1080p h264 encode anyway. A 1080p mpeg2 encoded Blu-ray movie might be ok but I haven't really tried. I'm not too fond of Blu-ray movies encoded with mpeg2.
Nothing you can do (software wise) will make it play smoothly without upgrading CPU or GPU hardware. Also, when you say P4, is it a HT CPU? A Hyper Threaded CPU might be up to the task but I am not sure of this.

Ok, let's clear this up... You don't need a hack to connect a Blu-ray optical drive to your P4 PC. Unless you are referring to overclocking your CPU in order for it to be able to handle the CPU intensive decoding that h264 demands. Again, I would like to reiterate that I am not sure that a P4 could handle 1080p h264 decoding under any workaround solution (even a HT P4). However, there is another thing to consider... Blu-ray drives require a SATA interface, where most older PC's will have an IDE interface.
Yes, a Dual Core CPU is the recommended minumum for 1080p Blu-ray movies. Like anything though it is hard to generalise. A 1080p MPEG2 encode should play without any problems on a Single Core CPU. MPEG2 is far less CPU intensive. It is with codecs like h264 that your CPU can become heavily taxed.
As I said previously though, you may want to look at your interface options before you start considering your CPU/GPU capabilities. If your PC lacks SATA, then you wont be able to attach a Blu-ray drive anyway.
Also, a higher powered CPU isn't the only way to get 1080p movie files to play. If you have a high end GPU (Graphics Card) and it can take care of the decoding, then that would alleviate the need for a powerful CPU. The recommendation for a Dual Core CPU is there as it is a more economical solution compared to going the high end GPU route.
As I said, it is extremely hard to generalise. Like anything there are guidelines in place to help provide an estimate as to what is needed but there is no definitive answer.
haha man, yeah i use Vista Premium, it can be annoying but it came with the new laptop and didnt really want the hassle of rolling it back to MCE 2005...I have no problems with it so far, and some of the new features i feel are even an improvement from XP. Some stuff is definitely a hassle though...

I try so hard to educate people about Usenet. They don't listen and when they find out they _might_ have to actually pay a small amount for a sub they get pissy.
