F**k Valentines Day

Valentines Day according to Wikipedia.com: [ link ]

It's funny how a day with obscure religious roots is marketed to the mainstream of America. It’s as if Hallmark wanted a way to line their pockets further by creating a marketable day for lovers. They don’t profit enough off the 100,000,000's of birthdays or dozens of other holidays each year. What if you’re single on Valentine’s Day? What if by no fault of your own you haven’t met the right person, are in between relationships, or too occupied with other things to maintain a relationship? Are you to be shamed by the CEO of a greeting card company because you happen to be single? What does he care, he’s a millionaire, and couples all over the world are putting his kids through college by spending money on roses and shoe-box greeting cards. Is there anything so specious as Valentine’s Day? If you love someone, why do you need a day just to express that? What are loving couples doing the other 364 days of the year? If you’re a bad partner the rest of the year, is a card and some flowers on February 14 supposed to make up for it? If two people love, care, trust, and respect each other, no greeting card, carnation, or box of chocolates is necessary. There lies an unspoken mystical understanding when two people share the same wavelength. That bond travels across time-space and isn’t going to be strengthened by spending $15 on some Ms. Godiva chocolates. If you earnestly love someone, your faithfulness, honesty, and actions reflect that every second of every day. There’s nothing wrong with expressing your feelings for someone by taking them out to dinner or getting them some flowers. In my opinion, the implication seems to be if you’re single on Valentine’s Day, there’s something wrong with you. All the happy couples in the commercials, flowers, diamonds, and chocolates. If you know anything about diamonds, you know they are mostly mined in Africa by guerillas who enslave villages, frequently use child laborers, and use terrorist tactics to ensure their diamonds are mined. Such tactics include torture and the removal of extremities for young children. It’s a well known fact terrorists smuggle things in Diamonds. Yet you see Debeer’s commercials on Valentines Day, encouraging you to spend a months salary on a shiny rock. Funny I don’t remember any adverts for diamonds mentioning 8 year old girls with one arm or Al Qaeda smuggling weapons. My point may be lost on the masses here. My point is this: Valentine’s day is an obscure holiday with few traceable roots that has become a marketing extravaganza for greeting card companies, jewelry stores, chocolate manufacturers, and the mass media. The implication being that if you’re single on February 14, there must be something horribly wrong with you. And if you are lucky enough to find that special someone, you must buy them a dozen roses, a diamond ring, and a box of chocolates to show it. An underlying theme of most of my blog entries is that critical thinking in America is a becoming a lost art. Valentines Day is a microcosm of a much bigger problem. If all this is lost on you... oh look at the time, “Dancing With the Stars” is about to start.
