This is my 70's Dean ML , my other favorite bass ! I played this one on the C# / drop B lowered tuning songs like "Damage" , "Master Fader" , "Just what the Doctor Ordered" and "Bite the Bullet." It has a mahogany body , flame maple top and maple neck with the big Dean "V" headstock . The wood is extremely resonant - it is the loudest bass I have ever heard unplugged !
As far as I can tell , it is mostly stock , maybe even the Kahler tremelo bridge ( yowzah ! ) It doesn't show signs of having originally been strung through the body but I wouldn't take the bridge off just to check for evidence of previous hardware . If the bridge was added later it was properly done and looks as good as a factory job . The DiMarzio humbucker pickups are probably stock also . They are very high output pickups and sound really good , but for some reason someone had put a preamp in there and it was really messing up the sound . The pickups were distorting the preamp and it sounded bad at any volume so it had to go , hence the empty holes where the controls used to be . Without the preamp it sounds 100 % better !
I got this one at the Nashville guitar show . It is like a big flea market for guitarists with hundreds of dealers from all over the country so you aren't supposed to buy the first thing you see . Poppycock ! Not if it is something like this ! When I walked in , the first thing I saw was this ML bass sticking out in every direction and I bought it right then - I didn't even plug it in . It was in a booth full of hollowbody Gretsch guitars and I beelined for it . The guy had reluctantly taken it as a trade , really had no idea what it was , and wanted to get rid of it before it scared any customers away . I quickly helped him out with that ! I had to carry it around the show all day and turned down several offers from lowballer gear sharks trying to buy it - not a chance ! Later that day we went to the campground near Opryland where our friends were staying . While sitting on the floor playing it , I touched the body to the wall inside and it vibrated the whole camper ! You could hear it as well as if it were plugged in at low volume .

Sometimes you just know you have the right one and once you know, you have to have it. That's a great bass, love the sound! Both of those basses are awesome.

    8 )

wooo thats bright! xD I like the body, it looks smaller to me than most basses

  • brainstrm (04 Mar 2006 17:02)

In the middle area , the waist , the body is thinner but in overall length the whole bass is actually almost 4 and a half feet long ! You made me curious about that so I measured it - ready for this ? From the east to west point , the body is 28 inches long ! The whole bass overall is huge - 4 feet , 4 inches standing up ! It is very comfy , not so heavy and balances well . I'll have to do a shot with something else in there for perspective . 8 )
