BRONCHITIS is a respiratory disease. It is an inflammation of bronchi, or air passages, characterised by cough, hacking cough, wheeze and mucus.

There are two major types of bronchitis: ACUTE and CHRONIC. Acute bronchitis is a common disease that normally protracts for a short period and is induced by flu, the common cold, or an infection. Thus, this kind of bronchitis is extremely infectious and is inherited via cough, sneeze & merely by touching things that have been touched by a sick person.

Chronic bronchitis is the other kind of the disease. Unlike acute bronchitis, it lasts for a longer period of time. Its symptoms are similar to those of acute bronchitic: cough and difficulty in breathing. Nonetheless, its causes differ significantly. Chronic bronchitis is commonly induced by smoking, second hand smoke, a virus and others. In fact, it is not transmitted from one persong to another. But it does not mean that the disease is less severe.

In spite of the different causes, the two types have a lot in common. Both of them are resistant to antibiotics. A virus causes bronchitis, & viral infections do not react to the germ-killing properties of antibiotics. They are effective against bacterial infections (such as strep throat and bladder infections). Antibiotics can also lead to complications, such as diarrhoea & yeast infections. Moreover, they can undermine your immune system. Thus, antibiotics may cause more harm than good when they are not used properly.

Whatever kind of bronchitis you suffer from, it starts with hacking cough and gradually turns into expectoration accompanied by fever, headaches and tiredness.

As long as you have the above mentioned conditions, your acute bronchitis is contagious. It you have had this disease for more than 6 months, you should schedule an appointment with your GP to get examined for other health problems.

The spread of bronchitis can be avoided. A sufferer should maintain a personal hygiene by regularly washing hands & covering the mouth when coughing.

The best cure for bronchitis is natural remedies. They will not affect your immune system as antibiotics can do and target the root causes. Natural remedies are effective against both acute and chronic bronchitis.

Anyway, it is better to avoid a disease than treat it.
