Why can't I watch my backed up movie on my stand alone DVD Player?

If you can't watch your backup on your stand alone DVD player and have gone through the steps listed in Why can't I burn? , then there are a few more things to try.

1. Make sure that you are using a format that is supported by your player, all DVD player cannot read all formats. Some will only play -R and some will only play +R, and some will play both.

2. For optimal compatability with stand alone DVD players you will need to booktype your media. Only +R discs are capable of being booktyped. Look here for what bitsetting/booktyping is.

In order to booktype you will need a few things:
A. A burner which is capable of booktyping, such as NEC, BenQ, Plextor, Lite-on, etc.

B. +R blanks.

C. A program to set the booktyping if your drive doesn't automatically do it for you.

DVD Decrypter and Nero support booktyping.

To booktype using DVD Decrypter, while in ISO write mode click the book icon in the bottom right hand corner of the top window.

A new window will pop up,

select the maker of your drive then in the Change for drop down menu you select the media you are using. Next, in the New setting drop down menu choose DVD-Rom. Click on change, and you should be booktyping your +R discs now.

This method also works the same with Imgburn.

If you are a Nero user and are using DVD Shrink for the encode and Nero for the burn you can set to booktype in DVD Shrinks options.

First you will need to enable burning with Nero in DVD Shrink's options. Open DVD Shrink, in the main screen go to edit->preferences->File I/O, tick the enable burning with Nero option.

Click OK to exit this window and return to DVD Shrink's main window. I'm assuming if you are this far along you already know how to use DVD Shrink so I'm not going into any of the intricacies of DVD Shrink. Edit your movie to your liking and hit backup. A new window will pop up, in the first screen titled Target Device, in the drop down menu for Select Target Device choose your DVD burner.

Click on the Burn Settings tab. For burn speed choose 4X. If your burner supports Bitsetting/booktyping you can tick the Book type
DVD-ROM
option, if your burner does not support this function the option will be greyed out. Next, tick the last box Burn at least 30mm (DVD=R/RW high compatability mode and Nero will try to booktype automatically for you.

This guide is not complete, it will soon include instructions on how to set bootkype using Nero Burning Rom.

@MaxBurn

Pretty nifty feature isn't it?

@DVDBack23

Have you tried booktyping +R's? PS2 aren't really the best DVD players, not to mention the wear and tear your putting on your laser...wouldn't a wally world el cheapo be a better choice?
