Power consumption of common home electronics devices

19 Nov 2007 12:37 (Edited: 19 Nov 2007 12:37)

I took the time to measure the energy consumption (i.e. Wattage) of some of my home electronics devices. Here are some (non scientific) results:

Devices tested:
Consoles: Xbox 360 (w/ HD DVD drive), Xbox, Nintendo Wii
Display devices: Sharp Aquos LC-42XD1EA Full-HD 42" LCD display, Sanyo PLV-Z4 720p LCD projector
Set-top-boxes: Dreambox DM7025CC DVB-C set-top-box (two tuners, 160GB PATA HDD), Linux VDR based set top box built around Antec Aria case (running Celeron 600 and two old 80GB PATA drives)
Receiver: Yamaha DSP-A5 DD/DTS receiver driving 5* 6Ohm JPW Mini Monitor speakers
Streaming audio: SlimDevices (now Logitech) Squeezebox
Monitor speakers: 2*Genelec 8020A monitors
Misc stuff: 8 port 10/100Mbps switch, WiFi router, wireless headphone transmitter, antenna signal amplifier, 600VA UPS (for set-top-boxes and projector)

Consumption figures:
Minimum idle power (Wii, Xbox 360 and TV on (deep) standby; Set-top-boxes and amplifier off; 10/100Mbps switch, WiFi router, antenna amplifier and wireless headphone transmitter on): 51W
Usual idle power (VDR and Dreambox set-top-boxes on or on standby): 142W

Sharp Aquos LC-42XD1EA: 128W (custom settings, backlight relatively low, close to 'Eco' mode)

Nintendo Wii: 13W (idle in menu), 13W (Mii parade), 13W (playing a game, Kororinpa)
Xbox: 56W (running XBMC menu)

Yamaha DSP-A5: 27W (driving all speakers at moderate volume, Dolby Digital or Stereo input)

Linux VDR set-top-box: 59W
Dreambox 7025CC: 36W (power on), 34W (standby with HDD on), 25W (hdd off), 3W (deep standby)

Usual combined consumption: 281W (TV, receiver and set-top-boxes on), with average usage of 5hours/day, that adds up to 1497.6kWh per year. (5 hours of full use, 19 hours of regular idle use per day = 512.825kWh/a + 984.77Wh/a = 1497.595 kWh/a)
