  The aquarium took the penguins after New Orleans was unable to care for them when they had their disaster. I guess if you're going to be in captivity, having one of the most respected, premier marine research facilites of the world care for you is about as good as you can get. I know in the case of a lot of the animals like the sea otters, those they care for that are able to be released back into the wild are let go. You can often see some of the ones who are being trasitioned back frolicking in the waters around the aquarium. Other animals that cannot be released back are kept and cared for. They have a very good breeding progam which allows them to minimize the capturing of wild fish etc and are the headquarters for the organization Seafood Watch, which promotes sustainable seafood use. As a parent and a teacher, I am impressed with the way so many places like this have become leading research, conservationist and educational facilites, rather than simply the repositories of displayed nature that they tended to be in my childhood. While I was there, for example, the murres (some arctic birds) on display had been rescued from an oil spill and were being nursed back to full health. You won't find any animals performing tricks or doing shows here. But there are a lot of interactive exhibits for adults and children to learn about the ocean, its creatures and how we depend on each other.   It was so fun seeing them - I had never seen real penguins before 8 )
  
  I really do wish they had let me go in there with them though - I think that would have been a good photo opportunity !
