A lot of people just won’t do it. Some are physically unable to do so. Those who do it are valued and appreciated by those who need it. I’ve been doing it since I was 17. It takes a special person to be willing to give this personally of themselves for the sake of others. At the moment of penetration, it’s good to know how to mentally prepare yourself for the pain, but if you know how to work your mind through it and the one doing it to you is good, you can get past it quickly or avoid any pain altogether. Done right, there should be very minimal if any pain involved and only for the briefest of moments. In the state that follows, it can be quite good. The really dedicated like me sometimes offer themselves up for a double pricking, knowing that it’s all for a good cause and they’re going to make it as enjoyable for me as possible so I’ll want to do it again and again.
Are you blushing yet? Oh, maybe I should explain that what I’m talking about is I gave blood to the Red Cross again! I don’t write about this aspect of my life very often, but it’s something I’ve done on a regular basis all of my adult life. Now is a good time to remind everyone who can, that if you’re a healthy person who can give blood, it would really be good to get out there and do it as soon as possible. It’s May and that means Memorial Day weekend is coming up. Summer is coming, the days are getting warmer and more people are likely to be out drinking and driving and accidents may happen. People are going to need blood and it doesn’t just magically appear in hospitals. People like you and I have to donate it so that when the unexpected happens and someone you love needs it, it will be there. With all the flu scare going around, some people who might have usually been there to donate may not be able to this month. It’s up to all of us to roll up our sleeves, not be wimps and take it like the awesome rocking metalheads we are.
Oh, and the double pricks? If you want to be a real badass like me, give platelets. Pussies get tattoos. Great. So you got stuck by needles a lot. Who lived because of what you did? Every time I give platelets, I get a needle in each arm. But instead of a picture that is going to be soooooo last decade ten years from now, I go home knowing that someone with cancer or some other serious health problem has just been given an important boost that may save their life. Several years ago I was a match for a patient in another state. Every two weeks I was giving platelets which would immediately be taken by plane to help treat this patient. You may never be called upon to be that important to someone else’s survival. Who knows, it could be you lying in the bed hoping someone out there will do it for you. So if you have a legitimate health reason why you can’t do this, don’t take it personally. We’re all called to give in different ways. But if you can, stop banging your head long enough to prove yourself worthy of your horns. Get out there and give!
