Neil Young's Living with War

(28 Apr 2006 23:39)

Tonight, KLOS premiered Neil Young's new album Living with War by playing the whole thing uninterrupted. Although he originally supported Bush on the war, he has come to feel so strongly opposed to this whole situation that not only has he come out with this album but has put it online for everyone to hear it for free. Go to his website: [ link ] and get the music and lyrics or use this link to go directly to the music [ link ]

Download it, listen to it but if you really want to send a message to the Bushies and their friends, go out and buy the album when it comes out in May too, since they look at stuff like sales. But you know that for Neil, the message getting out is what matters most or he wouldn't have put the music right on his website for anyone to download or put it right on his website that it was ok for people to host links on their pages too like I am doing. Gotta respect the guy for that. Thankya Neil, you've taken a principled stand and written some great music in the process!

Jim Ladd has always been one of LA's best DJ's but he really outdid himself tonight getting this album played and then spending so much time interviewing some of the people who were involved, talking about what a moving experience it was for all of the musicians and singers involved in the project and then taking listener calls, discussing their feelings about hearing it. Neil Young felt strongly that this album should be heard as a whole statement and Jim Ladd has always been the perfect outspoken DJ unafraid of taking a stand and making something like this broadcast happen.

Ok here are the lyrics now:

( 1 After The Garden

Won't need no shadow man
Runnin' the government
Won't need no stinkin' WAR
Won't need no haircut
Won't need no shoe shine

After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone

What will people do?
After the garden is gone
What will people say?
After the garden

Won't need no strong man
Walkin' through the night
To live a weak man's day
Won't need no sunshine
Won't need no purple haze

After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone

Where will people go?
After the garden is gone
What will people know?

After the garden
After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone

(We live in the garden of Eden, yeah
Don't know why we wanna tear the whole thing to the
ground
We live in the garden of Eden, yeah
Don't know why we wanna tear the whole thing down

And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden)

(2 Living With War

I'm living with war everyday
I'm living with war in my heart everyday
I'm living with war right now

And when the dawn breaks I see my fellow man
And on the flat-screen we kill and we're killed again
And when the night falls, I pray for peace
Try to remember peace (visualize)

I join the multitudes
I raise my hand in peace
I never bow to the laws of the thought police
I take a holy vow
To never kill again
To never kill again

I'm living with war in my heart
I'm living with war in my heart in my mind
I'm living with war right now

Don't take no tidal wave
Don't take no mass grave
Don't take no smokin' gun
To show how the west was won
But when the curtain falls, I pray for peace
Try to remember peace (visualize)

In the crowded streets
In the big hotels
In the mosques and the doors of the old museum
I take a holy vow
To never kill again
Try to remember peace

The rocket's red glare
Bombs bursting in air
Give proof through the night,
That our flag is still there

I'm living with war everyday
I'm living with war in my heart everyday
I'm living with war right now

3) The Restless Consumer

The people have heard the news
The people have spoken
You may not like what they said
But they weren’t jokin’
Way out on the desert sands
Lies a desperate lover
They call the “Queen of Oil”
So much to discover

Don’t need no ad machine
Telling me what I need
Don’t need no Madison Avenue War
Don’t need no more boxes I can’t see
Covered in flags but I can’t see them on TV

Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies

The restless consumer flies
Around the world each day
With such an appetite for taste and grace

People from around the world
Need someone to listen
We’re starving and dying from our disease
We need your medicine
How do you pay for war
And leave us dyin?
When you could do so much more
You’re not even tryin’

Don’t need no TV ad
Tellin’me how sick I am
Don’t want to know how many people are like me
Don’t need no dizziness
Don’t need no nausea
Don’t need no side effects like diarrhea or sexual death

Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies

The restless consumer lies
Asleep in her hotel
With such an appetite
For anything that sells

A hundred voices from a hundred lands
Need someone to listen
People are dying here and there
They don’t see the world the way you do
There’s no mission accomplished here
Just death to thousands
A hundred voices from a hundred lands
Cry out in unison

Don’t need no terror squad
Don’t want no damned Jihad
Blowing themselves away in my hood
But we don’t talk to them
So we don’t learn from them
Hate don’t negotiate with Good

Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies
Don’t need no more lies

The restless consumer flies
Around the world each day
With such an appetite for efficiency
And pace

Don’t need no more lies

( 4 Shock And Awe

Back in the days of shock and awe
We came to liberate them all
History was the cruel judge of overconfidence
Back in the days of shock and awe

Back in the days of "mission accomplished"
Our chief was landing on the deck
The sun was setting on a golden photo op
Back in the days of "mission accomplished"

Thousands of bodies in the ground
Brought home in boxes to a trumpet's sound
No one sees them coming home that way
Thousands buried in the ground

Thousands of children scarred for life
Millions of tears for a soldier's wife
Both sides are losing now
Heaven takes them in
Thousands of children scarred for life

We had a chance to change our mind
But somehow wisdom was hard to find
We went with what we knew and now we can't go back
But we had a chance to change our mind.

5) Families

When you try to bring our spirit home
Won't you celebrate our lives
In a way that's right for our children
And families

When you write your songs about us
Won't you try to do us justice
Because we want to be just like you
And your families

I see a light ahead
There's a chill wind blowin' in my head
I wish that I was home instead
With my family

There's a universe between us now
But I want to reach our and tell you how
Much you mean to me
And my family

I'm goin' back to the USA
I just got my ticket today
I can't wait to see you again
In the USA.

6) The Flags of Freedom

Today’s the day our younger son is goin’ off to war
Fightin’ in the age old battle
We’ve sometimes won before
Flags that line old main street
Are blowin’ in the wind
These must be the flags of freedom flyin’

Church bells are ringin’
As the families stand and wave
Some of them are cryin’
But the soldiers look so brave
Lookin’ straight ahead
Like they know just where they’re going’
Past the flags of freedom flyin’

Sister has her headphones on
She hears the music blasting
She sees her brother marchin’ by
Their bond is everlasting
Listening to Bob Dylan singin’
In 1963
Watchin’the flags of freedom flyin’

She sees the president speakin’
on a Flat screen TV
In the window of the old appliance store
She turns to see her brother again
But he’s already walkin’past
The flags of freedom flyin’

Have you seen the flags of freedom?

What color are they now?

Do you think that you believe in yours
More than they do theirs somehow?
When you see the flags of freedom flyin’

Today’s the day our younger son
Is goin’ off to war
Fightin’ in the age old battle
We’ve sometimes won before
Flags that line old main street
Are blowin’ in the wind
These must be the flags of freedom flyin’

7) Let’s Impeach the President

Let’s impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door

He’s the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war

Let’s impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones

What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government’s protection
Or was someone just not home that day?

Let’s impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected

Thank god he’s cracking down on steroids
Since he sold his old baseball team
There’s lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean

Thank God

8) Lookin' For A Leader

Lookin' for a Leader
To bring our country home
Re-unite the red white and blue
Before it turns to stone

Lookin' for somebody
Young enough to take it on
Clean up the corruption
And make the country strong

Walkin' among our people
There's someone who's straight and strong
To lead us from desolation
And a broken world gone wrong

Someone walks among us
And I hope he hears the call
And maybe it's a woman
Or a black man after all

Yeah maybe it's Obama
But he thinks that he's too young
Maybe it's Colin Powell
To right what he's done wrong

America has a leader
But he's not in the house
He's waling here among us
And we've got to seek him out

Yeah we've got our election
But corruption has a chance
We got to have a clean win
To regain confidence

America is beautiful
But she has an ugly side
We're lookin' for a leader
In this country far and wide

We're lookin' for a leader
With the great spirit on his side

Someone walks among us
And I hope he hears the call
And maybe it's a woman
Or a black man after all

9) Roger and out
Trippin’down that old Hippie Highway
Got to thinkin’ ‘bout you again
Wonderin’ how it really was for you
And how it happened in the end

But I guess I’ll never know the truth
If you were really all alone

We were just a couple of kids then
Livin’ each and every day
When we both went down to register
We were laughin’ all the way
That’s when we named it Hippie Highway
I still call it that today

Roger and out good buddy
I still call it that today
Two Camaros racin’ down the road
Feels just like yesterday

Roger and out good buddy
I feel you in the air today
I know you gave for your country

I feel you in the air today

Roger and out good buddy

10) America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good
with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

freedom to soar

(25 Apr 2006 15:25)

Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another.
Madonna (1958 - )

Through all the world there goes one long cry from the heart of the artist: Give me leave to do my utmost.
Isak Dineson, 'Babette's Feast'

There comes a time when you have to stand up and shout:
This is me damn it! I look the way I look, think the way I think, feel the way I feel, love the way I love! I am a whole complex package. Take me... or leave me. Accept me - or walk away! Do not try to make me feel like less of a person, just because I don't fit your idea of who I should be and don't try to change me to fit your mold. If I need to change, I alone will make that decision.
When you are strong enough to love yourself 100%, good and bad - you will be amazed at the opportunities that life presents you.”

This is so sad. Please read and please think everyone.

(23 Apr 2006 16:50)

What possesses people to think that they can ever have the right to control another person's life? Even with the best of intentions to be a loving partner, when they see clearly the severity of the unhappiness that has resulted, can't they have the decency to either change the things they are doing or the humility to realize that maybe they aren't meant to be together anymore and be loving enough to let go? That it doesn’t have to mean that they are bad people, just that they no longer are the right people for each other? Why do they feel the need to fight to the bitter end and make an already sad situation worse? Instead of parting sadly but peacefully as friends, why? why? why? must so many people insist on inflicting as much pain as possible on their way out?

I know now why our apartment building was on fire Saturday morning. I’ve been helping people from three apartments who lived directly under the apartment where it started move their stuff to other apartments on this property. It was a f***ing abuse case and if I get in any trouble for swearing on this site all I can say is how bad does it have to be before I’m allowed to? If this doesn’t merit a swear word, what does? The guy kept beating up his girlfriend; they said they would hear these awful fights. One night he made her sleep in the trash. Apparently they had yet another fight on Friday night. Early Saturday morning, she piled all his stuff into the middle of the floor and set it on fire. No wonder it was so big and so fast! They ended up jumping off the third floor balcony. And because of this, people in as many as 12-15 apartments have lost their homes, mostly to water and smoke damage. People could have died. All because two people couldn’t just agree to disagree and move on with their lives.

I had just completed jury duty Friday on a case that dealt with an abusive relationship. I know people who are in them and it’s not always the woman; men also suffer from women who try so hard to control so much that they end up creating the very hell that love was supposed to keep away. How can people be so blind, or if they do see the unhappiness that has happened, whether on purpose or despite their best intentions, how can they then not have enough caring left in them to change their ways or have the decency to allow themselves and the one they say they love the freedom to move on and find the peace they both need and want out of life? Isn’t that a much better definition of love, than holding on at all costs? Even when it doesn’t reach the extreme it did here on Saturday morning, even when it just leaves two people bitterly unhappy and unwilling to stop hurting each other. It’s so sad. Unbelievably sad. For all of them and all of us who must live in the same world as that.

I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions.

Scary scary fire in my apartment building.

(22 Apr 2006 4:51)

I'm very lucky this morning. It's just after 5:30 am and I'm back inside. I woke sometime between 2:30 and 2:45 ish I guess to hear men screaming outside in the courtyard that the building was on fire. I put some clothes on and opened my patio door, looked outside and saw nothing but flames pouring out of the third floor balcony just a short distance away from my place (I'm on the first floor). The picture is an aerial shot of our building I got off Terraserver and then added some labels in photoshop. Entirely too close for comfort.

They evacuated us all away from our building and over to the pool area. They also evacuated the next building over in our complex. LA Fire took about an hour to put it out, we could see lots of fire, smoke and hear them using their chainsaws to open up the roof. Another hour or more outside waiting to be allowed back in. Everyone in that wing of the building is unable to go back-- the whole third floor over there is burned- several apartments!, and the units below them have structural and water damage too great to allow anyone to go in there. My whole porch was soaked but it appears that I was incredibly lucky.. no water or smoke in here.

I cannot sleep here, the Fire Department is doing all kinds of noisy cleanup work outside, so I'm going to my ex's house for a while. I had only been sleeping at the very most a half hour before all this happened. What a week I've had! I guess I should just be glad it has been such a good news, bad news kind of week instead of all bad news. The important thing is that we're all ok as far as I know. Wow.

Update 4:40 pm
I have just now come home and am utterly exhausted. they are busy outside my patio hauling away furniture and bags of wet carpeting and doing all sorts of banging and working on the burned floor- I guess . The fire department is still here with two trucks, a great big ladder truck with the ladder going up to the roof. Elizabeth saw the story on the morning news on channel 4 (NBC) They confirmed what I had heard which was a guy had to jump out of the third floor balcony onto a matress- I had heard the story during the fire and when I saw my apartment, there was a matress sitting there on the ground one apartment down and across from mine. She said that was where the tv footage showed a guy standing on a balcony during the fire. They say no one was seriously hurt. :) picture

dreams

(08 Apr 2006 23:19)

Do not fear death so much but rather the inadequate life.
Bertolt Brecht (1898 - 1956)

How many dreams have we let others destroy? At what price have we bought a temporary peace with people who we cannot please without giving up the very things that make us who we are? How hard to we try to tell ourselves we are nobler and better than others for having the superior patience to suffer through it? How hard do we try to convince ourselves that we could not have succeeded anyway or that it didn't mean as much to us as it did? We must become who we are meant to be. One’s integrity is too important. Our talents were meant to be used to their full extent. Anything else can only be agonizing for all involved. It doesn’t mean that they are bad people, just that the things that they need to make them happy and the things you need may not coincide well enough. Compromise is essential in all human relationships. But you cannot force yourself to be who you are not for very long before something inside begins to die. And after all that, you find you have failed to make them or yourself happy anyway.

I lived this. I had to leave it because I saw what it was doing to me, to him, to our kids. I’m no quitter; this was a 23 year relationship. My life is not magically wonderful now, nor have all my problems been solved. But a year later, I have regained my health, something I had not had for several years. Your body will not lie. You have to listen to what it is telling you. What isn’t ok is staying around out of some grim desire to let it get as ugly as possible, to let your darkest demons out. We all have them and the bitterness can make us want to give them a chance to come out. But it is far better to resist that temptation to ugliness and remain a better person than that. It’s a place you cannot go and retain the respect of yourself and others. One cannot save one’s integrity by dragging it in the muck. We must still always deal with each other from a compassionate caring mindset. Even and really especially when it is painful. While we have to do what is right for us, we have no right to deliberately make it worse than necessary to others.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 - 1962)

I do not want to die. . . until I have faithfully made the most of my talent and cultivated the seed that was placed in me until the last small twig has grown.
Kathe Kollwitz

That you may retain your self-respect, it is better to displease the people by doing what you know is right, than to temporarily please them by doing what you know is wrong.
William J. H. Boetcker

If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.
Robert Fritz

Self-development is a higher duty than self-sacrifice.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902)

Afterdawn's celebrity rockers

(06 Apr 2006 19:35)

Afterdawn has a really great section called mp3lizard where you can download the best music ever! I know I've frequently put links straight up to -project brainstorm- [ link ] but what you might not have seen if you haven't been to mp3lizard's homepage is that at the top of the page you have seen this for months: [ link ]
Our users recommend these tracks
-=RkR=-: Jem Jam (Metal)
-PROJECT : BRAINSTORM-: Betrayal Be Thy Name (128Kbs 2nd attempt mix) (Metal)

These are top downloads and recommendations across all of the categories of music on that site.

Every one of Brainstorm's songs has had a turn at spending months at a time in the top five most downloaded metal category. (click specifically on the link for metal and you will find a page that gives the top songs for this and last week in that category) At the moment, -=RkR=- has a song that was one of last week's top five most downloaded metal songs. Brainstorm has a new one up at the moment and it is well worth your checking it out, it could make top five with your votes too. All of his other songs have.

Yes, the top two recommended musicians who have consistently ruled the charts on mp3lizard for months and months both have blogs on this site. Now that rocks!
