Over 100,000 suspended accounts...

12 Aug 2007 6:57

Wow, just checked our internal stats (nice page collecting tons of various useful/useless data from our site to one admin page) and realized that we have now well over 100,000 suspended user accounts. I find it somewhat hilarious, as I visit regularly on webmaster forums where people boast that their sites have, say, 10,000 registered users, etc :-)

Suspended account, on our site, means either a user account that has been permamently banned by one of our mods or admins or it can also mean that user has requested us to close his/her account. But most often it means that the email address associated to user's AfterDawn account has become invalid (either mailbox full for too long or the mailbox has been removed completely -- or, in some cases, given mail address is totally non-existent). Most sites don't "purge" these accounts from their system, but we do so on weekly basis.

Anyway, completely useless bit of data, but hey, its my blog and I like stats, even useless ones :-)

Wow, this just shows how big of a site this is. I wonder how many of those really are "suspended", as in banned perm by a Mod/Admin.

If a users account is suspended due to a "non-existent" email account and they change it to a real one does it re-activate it?

    Woah...

Pop: Of those 100k suspended, I'd say less than 10k are banned. And yes, if user changes his/her non-functional email address to a valid one and reactivates the account via email link, the account will be "resurrected".

fyi: the majority of website operate like the U.S. magazine business. The more subscribers a magazine has, the more it can charge $$ for its advertising. A magazine like, Sports Illustrated, Maxim or Forbes can charge several $10,000 for a 1/16 of page ad at back of magazine. These type of magazines are known as pedigree magazines. They are well known, and a drop in subscribers does not effect what they can charge. On the other hand, a hobby or niche magazine depends heavily on subscribers. They will frequently telemarket (phone) or send letters offering 1 cent for next year offers. The advertisers often don't know this. This makes the ability to stay in business = number of subscribers. Hope this is useful information.
