MMORPGs really CAN be fun

20 Jun 2006 10:17

Just writing a random thought. I've been doing massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) for quite a while, but have always strayed away from the pay to play variety. I never quite understood why someone would pay $50 for a game and then $15/month just to be able to play it. I've run through so many free and open beta MMORPGs that I had thought I got a pretty good grasp for how repetative they are.

With games like Conquer Online, which admittedly had lame graphics, poor lag control and a PvP environment that was way out of control, it sucked a good couple of years out of me. From there, I'd tried such free greats like ROSE Online, Knights Online, Kal Online, and just about any others that have the word Online in them. I even did try Guild Wars because they had a business model that didn't make the user pay a monthly fee. All of them had one thing in common..... the YAWN factor. There was no point, nothing to do but make a powerful character. Why? So you and other powerful characters can battle to see who has wasted more of their time becoming a powerful character.

I recently purchased and subscribed to my first pay to play MMORPG, RF Online and I have to say, I'm impressed. When a game maker has the financial backing to keep the content fresh, the servers up and the events plentiful, its a whole new world. For those of you who dont know, go over to [ link ] and simply watch the opening movie of it. I challenge you not to get intrigued.

The whole point of the game is that there is an invading race on a planet and 3 different races are competing for control of the planet. Thats cool in all, but what really shines is the game's interaction with the player. For instance, there are wars at given times during the day. Whatever race wins the war, gets control of the planet's greatest resource, the Holystone mine. With this, you can send your miners down to drill for ore which can be processed and help fuel the economy of your race. The more you mine, the cheaper your NPC prices become. So its beneficial to you to actually help out your race. Additionally, during war, the person with the most contribution points, IE most opposing race kills, gets to be the Race Leader. This person can issue orders to everyone else in their race and gets special armor and weapons that have all kinds of improved status on them. The interaction doesn't stop there. It all really has to be seen to appreciate. If anyone out there is an MMORPG fan, check this one out if you haven't already. It's a fun one.
