  What has happened is that the files on the old HDD are protected by the NTFS file system. That's a security feature that differs from FAT32.

  You didn't say it was the 616t, I assumed you bought an Xbox Samsung (the smart thing to do). How much did you pay for the 616t? The easiest way to change your drive is to buy a broken Xbox from eBay, then you get other parts for free!

  Hey I just wanted to say thanx I left the post about trouble with xboxhdmaker.. I figured it out.. there were some errors on the disc but none that caused problems.. The real issue was that I had my bios set to read only SATA so my primary IDE wasn't noticing a hdd.. got it figured out now.. cept I have a WD hdd that I tried to use but couldn't be locked.. good thing it was free! lol thanx alot for all the help

  I'm afraid i'm not overly familiar with customising the dash! I know how to add and change Evox skins, but that's about it! Sorry!
  
  As for manually updating the dash, the dashes website should tell you the process in better detail as each dash has different needs! The easiest and BEST way is to use AID!

  I want to softmod my xbox Version 1.6 (or 1.6b, not sure) but I've read some tutorials that say 1.6 or later won't work.
  
  1.) None of my friends have modded xboxes, so I can't do it exactly like in your tutorial on llamma. I'm going to use an action replay and a memory card.
  
  2.) I'm going to use Splinter Cell (my friend has the original) but I don't know what parts of it I need to put onto the memory card and what to do to them as far as zipping and unzipping, etc.

  If you are going to use the Action Replay method to get the files onto the memory card, there is a link right at the start of my tutorial! Use that to get the files across, then just continue the softmod process as per my guide!
  
  v1.6 will NOT need a dashboard update, so just skip straight to the softmod section!

  Okay you're the only person who seems to be able to point me in the right direction with modding problems... your solutions have worked more then once!
  My problem is; now that I have a larger HDD. When I rip my games onto the hard drive to the F partition, the dash doesn't find them and put them in the games
  menu. So do I just rip em all to the F partition and then swap them back and forth bewteen partitions to play them? OR is there another way to get Unleashed to
  detect the games in other partitions? Everytime I try to move them around so I can play them on the Xbox it says error cannot move.. unless I FTP them to my PC,
  and then back over to my Xbox.... Please don't tell me that the extra space on the other partitions is a wasted hdd?

  Hey, I was confused a bit in your Action Replay Softmod tutorial. Everything was clear except for the part extracting the SID-4.0-Nknave.rar file. I downloaded it with your link, then used WinRar to extract it, but later you said only extract the launcher file. Was I supposed to extract that file individually? or did I do what I was supposed to?

  ISOBuster can read into damaged partitions and recover fragmented files...
  
  As for the FTP issue, use FlashFXP and follow my guides...

  Just install ISOBuster, run it, it'll show you all the drives available, select the damaged one, it'll search the drives, recover the data and then you can just move it to a safe location! Phew! That was tough... ;)

  Hey Chunkhead i really need help is there away you can ftp to your xbox without being able to boot. I have error 16 and 21 on seperate HD"s. One is softmodded (21) The other one isnt (16) is there any way i can fix this. When i boot i get error and no screen nothing just service required.

  First off, I greatly appreciate your generosity in trying to help all of the newbies like myself about xbox stuff. I posted a thread today under "general discussion" about a known fix for xbox error 21. I have downloaded slayers and aid 3.0 and burnt them both on a dvd-r to try to reset my xbox but neither have worked. I have a soft-modded xbox by the way. Original games still work.   Hey, chunkhead. I'd like to ask you for some help regarding my XBOX, mainly error number 16. First off, I want to say how excited I was when I finally found your explanation on how to fix error 16. It was the most easily understandable and to the point tutorial I had found since on the subject. Thanks for creating it. Unfortunately, though I don't believe this had anything to do with your instructions, but rather a missed mistake on my part or something unknown to me about my BOX, I'm still ending up with the error after I'm finished. As far as I know, I followed your tutorial to the letter, so I don't know why this would be happening. However, throughout the process I did notice certain differences in the outcomes of steps I took and what you said do in the tutorial. For the most part, these seemed pretty insignificant, so I decided not to pay them that much attention. But perhaps if I list them for you, and you notice anything truly 'off', maybe you can tell me if any of these may be my problem.
  
  - First off, when I used make-iso-win.bat to make the linux.iso file for my disk, one thing was that the icon wasn't a disk it was something else. On top of, underneath the Linux.ISO, instead of saying PowerISO File like in your illustrations, it just said ISO File. After I went ahead with it and the disk worked through the recovery process, I just assumed this wasn't a big deal.
  
  - Secondly, at the part when you say unplug the XBOX DVD drive, turn it on, and you'll get an error 12, I actually got an error 11. I was silly and eager enough to chalk this up as just another small difference, and went on with it. Maybe i was wrong.
  
  Other than that, everything worked great. The CD went through the tool, took a long time to create the C: file on the HDD (which I assume it supposed to do), and created the E: file too. Everything seemed great, which I why I irritated me so much when I came out still screwed up. If you could please give me some kind of insight on what may be wrong, any ideas you could have, I'd really appreciate it. I desperately NEED my HALO, I need my SPLINTER CELL, I need my BLACK:) Thanks in advance man. Hope to speak to you soon.

  Okay I got it on me E:/ but XBMC keeps stuffing up such as: Theres no sound when trying to play music (well thats about it lol). If I could find my AID cd id just use that 1 that worked perfectly I think this one is just faulty. What's your thought?

  XBMC can be a pain if you keep installing builds over other builds! Backup the \USERDATA folder (all your settings, thumbnail, etc) and delete the rest of the folder! Install the new build and then copy the \USERDATA folder back! You can do this whilst XBMC is running!

  Ive tried using HOT AIR with concentrated nozzle to try and fix it, didnt work, then I tried just using the soldering iron on the traces all the way from the BT point underneath the mobo to the LPC port underneath the mobo, still nothing..
  
  I mean, can I assume that there are only 3-4 traces that have corrosion since it boots up fine when it gets power? (I see the bios bootup and hear the flubber sound) or shall I assume that perhaps all around the mobo there are corrusion?
  
  another thing, you dont happen to have a diagram of which traces/wires that goes from pwr/eject PCB to the LPC area so I can just make new wires, cause that would intheory work right?

  hey chunkhead, I wonder if there is a way to install a softmod without the actionreplay thing. I got my xbox softmodded from a friend, but i messed up things a little, so i wanted a fresh install for the softmod and the dashboard. I have access to my xbox via FTP, the HDD is unlocked. What I would like is to set up only XBMC in that xbox, but it'll do with an Evox dash or something... so is there any way to do so without 'actionreplay'???

  chunkhead i need your help ! i have the same problem as corey ( error 5 softmod ) i got my eeprom.bin out of my hard drive and burned the linux.iso , i booted it up and was faced with 4 options in stead of 3 but i pressed the one that said the same in the tutorial the dos one but when i type "lockhd-a" i get an error saying password not fount ( it spells found wrong ) i then tryed the other option of doing it in linux but when linux is loading it stalls i burned the linux iso about 3 times at the slowest speed possible and still no luck ! any suggestions on what 2 do , thanks in advance andy ;)

  can you use an external HD in the same way you can an internal on an Xbox (i.e. to save games and movies to). I know you can use flash drives as memory cards, but I couldn't find anyone who tried the external in that fashion. thanks man

  Custardly - i know im not chunkhead but i think you are able to if you have a modded dash such as unleashx or evolutionx as when i have my usb flash drive plugged in it comes up as J: on the file explorer and i can ftp files to it from my computer so i dont see why you cant ?

  I have an Unmoded xbox that just started popping up error 16. i follow some Turts on how to Howswap fix it. but xboxhd Says there is no Fatx Partition, it also will not build/rebuild the hd. i tried Xplorer360 says thers no Fatx. i also tried Howswap to another box with Slayers, but after formatting i still get Error 16. So then i tried FTPing while loaded into slayers and FTP doesnt find anything on the drive. is there anyway to fix it?

  Directed towards MONKEYEARS- As for the not having a floppy drive, alot of users have that issue with new system and portables. Have you tried using a virtual floppy application saved my @$$ several times one i use is Virtual Floppy Drive Plus, known as vfdwin.exe

  Ok Srry I have a problem with my xbox its not super huge cause i can still play games and i have a 360 now :) but i run xboxhdm which is an awesome program and it ran once good but then I dont think i did the dash right so i cant boot into the microsoft dash and i have not been able to run the xboxhdm successfully it always
  Cant find linux cd.... and so i read all this stuff i burned multiple discs and well as used an entirely different PC to try any ideas i tried xplorer 360 and stuff to with no luck.... If this was a thread that would be awesome but i dont know if you check.

  im getting an error 5 after installing new hd,can you help me?

  Hello Chunkhead, i'm completely new here but have been browsing the site and this topic - softmodding the xbox for a while now. Been using the tutorial for a while now... few different usb sticks & to be honest most havn't worked apart from one. But this is where the problem starts - i followed the intructions, ie - Put the usb in Xbox, Xbox deleted. Put back into pc, did not let windows format. Did the Vendot id and the other. Updated the xbreader then saved. Updated the driver. Saw the max drive was now in place.
  
  That is where i got to, basically i didn't have sc classic until today but i was messing round with the new max drive usb and somehow now when i open the action replay software to drag the game saves over, there is now no max drive ie old usb showin up. I put the usb back in the xbox however and it shows there is a controller showing ?
  
  Any ideas ??? Thanks for your time.

  i have the same problem as a very satasfied person on the forums ive tried everything also and it had been doin my head in
  i get everything configured and sorted for my memory stick when going to ar to transfer into memory stick
  the logo flashes green then returns to grey again
  ive littrally spent days and nights sitting here im not letting it beat me
  what am i doing wrong??
  my mate has a moded xbox i tried to load game saves over that my non modded xbox reconises the stick altho when i go into the saves do not show up
  so im back to the ar theory im ure its something simple
  i have done littrally everything in my forum reading power to fix this with no joy please be my savour....

  hi chunkhead i am new on here and i read what you say about the xbox
  360 dvd rom its great but i have one problem my meter differs from yours mine dosent have 2000 ohms on it.
  mine has 200 2k 20k 200k 2m 200m can you please tell me which of the
  settings i should use. please help the make of my meter is the ms8230b if this is any help to you

  Hi I was wondering if you could help me out. Im using a confirmed working usb drive( cruzer micro 1gb), i followed the steps, but is still cant see the MaxDrive Xbox
  
  ps) i couldn't get the inf file to save into the file location once i changed the numbers so i saved it to desktop, deleted old inf, then moved new inf to proper location. I dont think this maters but just ketting you know

  Need your help if you are still here: I have checked out your guide to fix error 5 as well as the ones all over google. I tried them ones however my PC didn't register the HD of my error 5 HD and I didn't have the eeprom...before I attempt to retry hotswap, I want to make sure I understood your directions right...here is what I have made of it, please correct the steps if wrong, thanks:
  1.Download 360xplorer
  2.Hook xbox HD up to PC by taking out Primary IDE and hooking to xbox (a lil lost there...don't understand how to tell difference in IDEs as my PC has a bunch)
  3. Extract eeprom from Partition 4 using xplorer and save to PC
  4.Download XboxHDM 1.9 and put eeprom into folder that says eeprom
  5.Run make image thingy and put onto a disc
  6. (Don't understand this part) Hook the HD to the pc by doing? then run the disc (I can run disc, but don't know correct way to hook up) Then I go to lockhd thing (3) and type lockhd -a...That is all I understand so if you could guide me as you sound like you know what your doing compared to the google people I would greatly appreciate,

  Hi, i just removed my xbox from where i can reach it with a wired connection. i have a router and a wireless connection in my room where i am trying to set up my xbox and play xbox live. I tried your advice from troubleshooting page and still could not get it too work. Anyway you could help me either set it up through my router or even just through my internet using a shared conncection? Thanks, Pete

  Hey man, I'm desperate for some help. I'm trying to install Evox on my XBox and it seems like I'm just coming up with nothing. I installed it on my XBox a couple years back and it seemed a lot easier than it does right now. I can't seem to find any good saves for the installer, and I lost the old memory card that had it. I've tried to drag a bunch of Linux installers onto the action replay and it says it's not a valid XBox save. Am I doing something wrong or is there any way you can point me in the right direction.   You are the one true guru of all things Xbox! I've been reading your tutorials, troubleshooters, and following your advise for the other noobs and they have been an absolute lifesaver. Thanks to you, I was able to get my xbox modified quickly, easily, and the right way the first time out.
  
  I do have one issue though. I would like to play back-up copies of xbox games on my box, but the disc is not recognized. I suspect that I will need a modified BIOS to disable the built-in encryption, but am unable to find one for a soft-modded xbox. THe only one's I see available are for hard modded xboxes. I tried using xbins, but get the 530 error every time I try to start the transfer of any files.
  
  I am using the C-drive info that you provided for soft modding. Current BIOS is the Xbox retail version.
  
  Any help, direction, or clarification that you can provide would be great.

  You are the xbox god so here is a question for ya? I have upgraded a few xboxes with no problem but I am trying to upgrade one to a 400 gig seagate ide. I was getting a error 5 but was able to unlock it. Now I am getting an error 13.... I have tried rebuilding from scratch 3 times using xbox hd maker, tried copying c drive from original hd to a hdmaker disk, tried clean 5960 ms dash files.. I am really frustrated and could use your help. I have eeprom and back up of c drive. Thanks!!!!!!!

  I really appreciate all your excellent work and kick ass contributions to the xbox community. I have had my original xbox lying around my place for a while and decided to mod it. I have everything I need I just have one little problem. I am attempting to transfer the necessary files to my xbox using usb and as such need to format it how you describe in your how to softmod a usb device. I have done everything as you have indicated but I have come across a problem. When I try to update the driver on my usb, my computer does not find the maxdrive driver to install. I have tried everything, including reinstalling AR over and over. Do I have to find the driver somewhere? I thought it was included in action replay. Anyway thanks a bunch. Please get back to me.   Hey chunkhead I've enjoyed my modded xbox up to this point via your tutorials - thank you. However I've come to a snag. Do you still sell eeprom readers?   I am attempting my first softmod. I have done days and days of research and all your posts at afterdawn.com have seem to be best tuts and guides I have seen.
  I completed the usb mod with no problems and found a lexar usb flash drive that my xbox accepts and formats. I insert it into my pc and run usb veiw. change vid and pid in both AR folders. copied to C:Windowes/system32/driver folder. Then access the device manager and find the usb. it is shown as a generic volume. i update driver and select xbreader file in the ar driver folder which i have already modifidy. it trys to install the promts the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. The VID and PID in usb veiw match the VID and PID in the ar xbreader file.

  Hey Chuck, PLs update your guides as some of the SCREENSHOTS are not showing (xbox USB softmodding) and it would be VERY HELPFULl if they were viewable.

  Hey i love ur guide and stuff but im stuck on softmodding my xbox. I got a usb 2gb scandisk micro skin ok i dont know if it's compatible but i can't install the actin replay driver on vista in device manager help me Chunkhead. help a nub like me :P

  What is the best way to softmod an xbox, I want to install unleashx ( Some guy once modded my xbox and installed unleashx and many emulators but my cousin somehow messed up the dashboard and I got the error 21) I fixed the error by hotswapping but I no longer have unleashx and I dont know how to install it again.

  Ok here is the situation. I had a friend softmod my xbox and I know that he used the 007 game. Recently I got the error code 16 on my xbox, so I used your tutorial and my xbox is now working. Thank you very much, however, now I cannot access the files, apps, games, other dashboards. Please let me know how I can restore these items. Do I have to run the softmod through the 007 game again or is there something else. Just an FYI I do not know much about these things it was a friend that modified my xbox, and I was able to repair the error 16 only through your great tutorial. So please guide me through what I need to do.

  I followed your instructions about unlocking XBOX HDD i got all the files and software that i need (i think) but after i double click the make-iso-win.bat the ms dos pops up and making but this the image file linux.iso it doesnt appear anywhere in my computer i tried to search it but it doesnt come up, please advise what i need to do or do i need software to recognise the ISO mage?

  Chuckhead, I have seen your pot tweaking guide and I am impressed. I run a shop with my dad and I work on Xbox's in all forms of the trade. However, my dad is not sold on your guide and I cannot continue with my work without his approval. I must ask this.
  
  If the Xbox says Please put this disc in a xbox 360 console, could the pot tweaking fix this issue if the laser is not dying out? I hate to ask for a quick reply, but we've been searching forever for a fix and my dad grows aggressively impatient. Please reply within your thread on the subject or in my shoutbox.
